Melbourne, Australia.
Melbourne. The second city often takes tourists by surprise. People we spoke to say that they turned up with little idea of what to expect – and ended up being blown away. The city certainly doesn’t have Sydney’s iconic buildings or incredible setting, though the great new Federation Square can give any rival city a run for its money.
Melbourne also has charm – by the tram-load. Hop on one of these incredible vehicles and clank off to a suburb like St Kilda for a funky day by the water. Or walk down Brunswick Street to see some fantastic coffee bars, restaurants and arty shops. Sports fans can be in heaven. The city is a Formula One site and unlike stuffy old Wimbledon anyone can pay a fee and play tennis in one of the vast stadium courts at Melbourne Park where the Australian Open is held at the start of the year.
If you fancy watching a game of Australian Rules Football then Melbourne is also a great place to do so. Melbourne Football Club – The Demons – play at the incredible Melbourne Cricket Club so you get to check that venue out at the same time. The official website for visitors is, not surprisingly, www.visitmelbourne.com.
